Best Western Port O Call hotel is easily accessed, near the airport and many other kid-friendly Calgary attractions, a quick stop when you’re heading more South and travelling from Edmonton, and want to break up the driving time with kids – and it’s an easy way to entertain the kids at the hotel.
Ranging in price between $130-170 per night, depending on the season and the website that you’re booking through, the big selling point of Best Western Port O Call is the hotel waterslide and pool. With two larger water slides for the older children, and a toddler and infant pool for the younger ones, with a rock style slide that’s slow enough for new sliders, there is something to entertain kids of every age.
The hotel pool is open until 10:30 pm, and is a zoo on the weekend evenings and through the summer. If you don’t care too much about making bedtime, waiting until 8:30 or 9:00 pm to hit the pool for a half hour or an hour before bedtime is going to help to lessen the crowds.
Breakfast is available from $15-25 per person, but we’ve always skipped the hotel breakfast – at that price point, I would rather hit up another one of our favourite breakfast spots in Calgary.
Room service is available, a plus if you’re travelling with kids and want to grab something quick but again, there are better options available, literally a click away. Use Skip the Dishes or Uber Eats and grab a pizza from White Papers, or check out the many other restaurants that deliver with the app. We’ve had the pizza and wings from the hotel restaurant, and they were average at best, a bit expensive in comparison with the other options available to you.
The beds are comfortable, the rooms are large and a king-room includes a sofa-bed with a king-bed, and you can borrow a playpen or crib from the hotel if you’ve got an infant or toddler. That makes it affordable for a family who is searching for a quick getaway from Edmonton, whether you’re spending the weekend in Calgary or heading South and using it as a stopover.
The room was clean, with the exception of a few things overlooked like a charger someone left behind under the bed, and melted ice in the ice bucket. You get what you pay for though, and let’s face it – we paid $140 for the night with a Hotels.com promotion code. And let’s face it – you’re there for the kids, you’re not there for a spa weekend getaway with incredible service.
