How to Find Cheap(er) Flight Deals When You’re Travelling with a Family

Flights are one of the most expensive parts of travelling with children. Booking two flights used to be simple (and inexpensive) – but now, booking four flights, soon to be five flights, and eventually six flights? That can really drive up the price for those family vacations.

But it doesn’t have to – finding cheaper flights when you’re travelling with the family isn’t that difficult, and here’s how we do it.

Let Someone Else Do the Legwork
Let someone else do the work for you. Locally, we follow YEGDeals and YYCDeals where we find deals posted for flights, hotels and vacations. They post incredible deals like $450 return from Edmonton to Europe, and scan through the many different flight sales and vacation deals to bring the best of the best, to the forefront. Though the posts can be infrequent at-times, the full details of cost and availability are posted on their social media pages, making it easy to find something that you’re interested in.

Don’t Be Airline Specific
If you’re only willing to fly with your preferred Airline, you’re going to miss a hoarde of vacation and travel deals from other airlines. That being said, you should get on the email list of your preferred airline, to make sure you’re getting the deals and promotions first, before other customers reading about it in a travel forum, or visitors to the airline’s website.

… But Use those Miles
Use a credit card that collects miles for even the smallest of purchases, and watch those miles accumulate quickly. Don’t spend the miles on housewares, or gift cards and save them for flights, where you’re going to get the best bang for your buck. Having one rewards card that you use monthly, and repay monthly, is an easy way to get reduced-cost, or even free flights, every year. Even if you don’t have enough miles to fly the entire family to the destination, it still frees up money to take a couple of tickets off of your travel costs, by redeeming miles.

Be Prepared to Act Quick
Have the money in your travel savings account at your disposal and ready to use. The quickest fingers get the cheapest flights, I like to say. Act quickly and have the travel fund ready to use, because you’re going to have to take advantage of hot deals and flight sales quickly, in order to get the best bang for your buck.

Leave it to the Experts // Sorta
We follow a few local travel agents on their social media pages, and a recent sale piqued my attention. It was just under $2,600 for a five day trip with flights and hotel, to Disneyland. Getting the numbers back from the travel agent, it was closer to nearly $4,000 but using the same dates and searching on Kayak, I was able to find flights for the entire family for just over $1,200 – combined with a vacation rental or even a moderately priced hotel, we’re still around the cost that originally piqued my attention.

What are some of the ways that you save on flights when you’re travelling with the fam?
